Ted & Buck Golf! " Punch or Knockdown Shot "

In this weeks tip were going to deal with the “Punch” or “Knockdown” shot as it is also referred to. It has many applications, such as keeping the ball low to avoid an obstacle, it can be very effective in windy conditions. It can also be used when you just need to control the trajectory of of your golf ball. Let's use this scenario for purposes of our tip today. You have approximately 150 yards left to the pin, but have about a 20 mph headwind to deal with. So how do you prepare to handle this shot?

The first thing that you want to do is to choose the right club, you should take one more club than normal depending on the severity of the wind. For most players an 8 iron would be the standard choice so I would recommend you choose a 7 iron for this shot.

Next you want to move the ball back in your stance to say about the center or even slight further back. By playing the ball further back you are encouraging a more descending blow which is mandatory for this kind of shot. Open your stance slightly too otherwise, with the ball further back you will tend to push the ball to the right.

For this shot you want take a ¾ backswing and finish with keeping your hands low in the follow through. This will promote the low trajectory that you are looking for here. On this type of shot remember to swing towards your target and aim for the front part of the green as this shot produces more release than normal.

Practice hitting this shot the next time you have windy conditions on your practice range. Experiment with different clubs from different yardages, and with a little practice you will gain the confidence you need to hit this shot.

Ted & Buck Tips: Open Your Mind

Having the best equipment, playing on a top course, or having endless knowledge about the golf swing will never yield success in the game if the golfer doesn’t know how to use his mind on the course.

Things like anxiety, emotional reactions, and distractions can all cripple a golfer’s ability and keep him from success.  Overcoming these obstacles is the key to lower scores and the only way to do that is “To Clear Your Mind.”

To improve, you have to keep your mind ‘Open’ to new techniques and instruction.  It has been often said that a beginning golfer tends to be more open minded to instruction than an expert golfer who tends to view instruction with a skeptical and closed mind.

A great many golfers come to a lesson with so many preconceived ideas about their swing that they are unable to digest anything the instructor introduces.  When receiving instruction you must be willing to try different techniques and put practice time in to perfect it.  Withhold any judgment about the new technique until you have put it into practice for awhile.

Ben Hogan comes to mind as a perfect example of keeping your mind open.  He was one of the greatest ball strikers of all time, practiced relentlessly, and never seemed to tire of trying new techniques, in fact, he delighted in it because he believed there was always more he could learn.  He kept his beginners mind, meaning he was always open and receptive to new things and ideas.

On the course you have to open your mind to letting go of stress, anxieties, distractions and reactions.
These are negative components in a game.  Deep breathing before each tee can release tension and promote relaxation, which will help you achieve a more relaxed swing.

While on the sidelines visualizing successful shots  can eliminate emotional reactions instead of beating yourself up for a previous blunder.  Also, keeping your mind on the game is critical for success.  Instead of getting distracted by conversation, golfing tips from fellow players, text messages vibrating in your pocket…use your time to focus your mind on how techniques are working for you.

Keep your mind clear, open, and free from distractions.

See you next time!

eSoutherngolf.com-Review of " No Sweat Lotion"

No Sweat Lotion

Tuesday, July 5, 2011

If you have ever played in hot and humid weather before, chances are you have had your hands slip off of the golf club a few times.  Even those that have sweaty palms have faced similar situations.  This can cost you many unnecessary strokes when out on the golf course, and can easily be prevented when using the right product.  One product to consider is No Sweat Lotion by NoSweatLotion.com.

There are four features about this product that separate it from similar lotions, according to their official website.  The first is that the No Sweat Lotion does not leave a sticky feeling but rather provides a dry, soft feeling on the hands instead.  The second is that No Sweat Lotion does not have any odors attached to it, which is great for those who have allergies to these types of products.  The third feature that separates No Sweat Lotion from its competitors is that it does not leave a white residue on the hands, clubs, or clothing.  Similar to suntan lotion, this type of lotion stays on even when water gets on the hands; it comes off easily when washing with soap and water though for a short period of time.

Can No Sweat Lotion really stand up to a few rounds of golf in the hot weather of summertime Florida?  I decided to give it a few tries in 94 degree weather to see if it really worked or not.  One of the first things I noticed about the product is that one must follow the directions in order to best utilize it.  The directions indicate that you not only have to spray your hands but also rub the lotion in for at least twenty seconds in order for it to work properly.  I have to admit though, after rubbing it in for the amount of time indicated it really provided that dry, soft feeling that the website discussed.  There was no mess involved at all, which was really surprising given that it was a lotion and all.  There was also no odor as I could tell when first using the product.

After playing the first few holes with the product I noticed that it was working just as the website said it would.  It did not leave a sticky residue on any of the clubs in my bag and kept my hands dry the entire time.  This is certainly a product that anyone who constantly has to use a towel to dry their hands to use instead.  In fact, I did a comparison between using a regular golf towel and using this product and I found that the No Sweat Lotion was better to use.  When using the same regular golf towel over and over the sweaty residue just builds up, so that when going back to the towel later in the round it is soaked. No Sweat Lotion on the other hand works throughout the entire round and leaves no residue whatsoever.

Overall, I would certainly recommend No Sweat Lotion to anyone who has problems with sweaty hands out on the golf course.  It works exactly as the website indicates, and at under $10 for a 3 oz bottle one can get between 50-60 applications before having to get a new one.  In other words, if you play only twice a month the product will last you for over two years.  It is a great deal to check out the next time you head out for the golf course in hot and humid weather.

"T-Pro Golf Caddy" App Review: by Michael Conrad

T-Pro Golf Caddy is a cool app for the iPhone!  OK, I hear you asking, “what does it do?”  Well, the T-Pro Golf Caddy app is a series of short videos to help with your golf game.  I can’t tell you how many times I have been on the tee box trying to figure out if I open the club face or close the club face to hit a draw.  Well, with this app, all I have to do is go to the main menu and select the shot I am trying to hit.  In this case it, I hit the “driving” button which brings me to another menu.  There my choices are “Straight Drive”, “Draw”, “Fade” “Hybrid” or “Par 3 knock down shot”.  I click on “Draw” and quickly, Ted & Buck shows me in 1 minute and 13 seconds how to hit the draw shot.  My only wish is I could execute it as good as Buck in the video.  There are videos for every part of your golf game.  From the main menu, you can choose “Golf Swing”, “Driving”, “Thru the Green”, “Bunker Play”, “Short Game”, “Trouble Shots”, “Putting”, “Practice Area” or “T&B Tips”.  There is a video for any shot you want to hit, or it seems like any situation you can get on the course.  You have all seen the tour caddies giving advice, well this is your tour caddy!  Now, I wouldn’t recommend going out with your buddies and watching a video before every shot, what I do is watch a few videos while I am eating lunch.  Another great way to use this app, is to take it to the driving range.  The app cost is $9.99 available in the app store.  You should be able to get that back by improving your score and winning a few bets!  Check them out on-line at http://www.tedandbuckgolf.com/

Moving From The Range To The First Tee

“Why can’t I take my range game to the golf course?”

This is one of the many challenges faced by all levels of golfers who continue to be frustrated by this transition. The answer to this question involves several possible mistakes golfers often make. With a little tweaking you can make a successful transition from the range to the course! One reason for poor transition from the range to the game is purpose. While on the range, before a round, you are usually trying to get comfortable with your swing. You are trying to see how it feels that particular day, searching for some swing key, etc. However, when you get to the tee during a game it’s all about performing: hitting a good golf shot, avoiding trouble and trying to make as few strokes as possible. With such different purposes, it’s no wonder you make an entirely different swing on the first tee than on the range.

Another reason for poor tee performance is fear. If you hit a poor shot on the range there is no penalty; however, on the course it matters greatly as there are consequences. Fear, now enters the picture, which introduces tension. With tension in the mix, your tempo becomes affected, which ultimately hampers the freedom with which we swing. A common mistake many golfers make on the range is hitting the same club over and over again until you get it right. You just set up and hit ball after ball, over and over again with no specific target in mind. Once you get to the first tee, however, it is completely different. Now you have to aim at a target and focus on where you want to send the ball, your alignment suddenly becomes important. Your rhythms are different from the range to first tee, and you need to make that transition in order to be successful. One way to correct this problem is to imagine playing a few holes while at the range.

For example, pick a target on the range and visualize hitting there with your driver, imagine the shape of the fairway, and hit the shot required, fade or draw etc. Then look for a flag that mimics your approach to the green, and play that shot. Do this for a par-5, par-4 and even a par-3. This will give you more real life course conditions, and better prepare you for your upcoming round.

In conclusion, changing the way you practice your pre-round warm-up by visualizing the course and shape of the fairway and practicing with a target will help you make a successful move from range to first tee. You come away with a sense of already playing a few holes when you get to the first tee. This will give you the confidence needed to have a more enjoyable round and a better overall experience.
